Problem first.
Solution later.

Most agencies start with the solution. We start with the challenge you bring us. Then we examine the evidence, understand what’s driving it and decide what the work should be.

The answer usually
shows up too early.

What it looks like

A campaign gets requested after sales slow. More media is considered when earlier spend stops performing. New creative is commissioned when the message isn’t connecting. Any of those could be the right response.

But a brief can quickly turn into a budget, a team and a schedule before anyone has tested what’s really driving the need.

We work the other way around. We start with the challenge, examine what’s happening and why, then decide what needs to change. Only then do we decide what to make.

Something is happening

Companies usually come to us because something is happening.

  • Growth has slowed.

  • An audience has moved.

  • The category has changed.

Sometimes all anyone knows is that something feels off. That is enough to start.

We don’t need a perfectly written brief or a predetermined list of deliverables. We need to understand what the business is dealing with and what needs to be different.

Start with the problem

We start with the challenge as you understand it.

Then we test that understanding against the evidence. We read the numbers, talk to employees and customers when the work calls for it, and spend time with the people closest to the business. We examine who the brand wants to reach and what drives choice, then compare that position with its messaging, distribution and results.

What looks like an advertising problem might trace back to a position that has become difficult to articulate. What looks like a creative problem might be work that has lost sight of the brand’s direction. A closer look can also uncover small disconnects before their effects become obvious.

Sometimes the original explanation is exactly right. We don’t assume everything is drift; we establish what is happening before deciding what to do about it.

What needs to change

Once we understand the problem, we decide what needs to change. What winning looks like. What matters most. What happens first.

Only then do we decide what to do.

The work and the people

The problem decides what gets done. And who does it.

The work, whatever it takes

  • Advertising
  • Creative strategy
  • Research
  • Media
  • Content
  • Internal communications
  • Experiences
  • Technology

The people, whoever it takes

  • Strategists
  • Creatives
  • Producers
  • Researchers
  • Technologists
  • Specialists

We don’t predetermine the deliverable. We don’t predetermine the team either. No bloated standing team, no package to sell.

What that means

Sometimes that means advertising. Sometimes creative strategy, research, media, content, internal communications, an experience or technology.

Sometimes the business needs to fix something before another dollar of marketing will help. We’ll tell you so.

Creative is a tool. Media is a tool. Technology is a tool.

Most agencies sell what they make. At Tempo, the solution has to earn its way into the room.

The practical version

Four moves. One direction.

Every engagement follows the same logic. The work changes depending on the problem. The way we get there doesn’t.

Move 1

Diagnose

What’s happening and why?

We start with the challenge as you see it, then examine who the brand wants to reach and what drives customers to choose it. We compare that position with messaging, distribution and results in market.

Diagnosis can go beyond the obvious and uncover smaller gaps that may not yet be visible. Sometimes it confirms what you know; sometimes it points elsewhere.

What you getA clear view of what’s happening, what’s driving it and what deserves attention.

Move 2

Strategize

What needs to change?

We turn the diagnosis into a direction. What needs to be different. What winning looks like. What matters most. What happens first.

Nothing gets made simply because it was the original idea.

What you getA clear direction for what needs to happen next and why.

Move 3

Execute

What does the problem need?

Now we choose the response and build the right team around it.

That might mean advertising, creative strategy, research, media, content, internal communications, an experience, technology or a combination of them.

No predetermined package. No forcing the problem into the services we happen to sell.

What you getThe work the strategy calls for, built around the outcome we agreed on.

Move 4

Sustain

How do we keep the work aligned?

The first launch isn’t the end of the relationship.

We stay alongside the client and keep examining what happens as customers, priorities and the market change. The same diagnostic discipline helps us catch small gaps early and adjust the work before it loses direction.

What you getAn ongoing partner keeping strategy, creative and marketing connected.
